Reasons For Extraction

There are a few reasons why your child may need a tooth extraction, including severe decay or an infected tooth, overcrowding, or even to make space for braces. If a tooth has been injured and damaged badly, it might also need to be removed.

When a cavity isn’t treated in time, the decay gets worse and can cause pain or infection. If the infection spreads, it could affect nearby teeth, gums, or even the bone. In rare cases, it can spread throughout the body, which can lead to serious complications.

Sometimes, a damaged tooth can be saved with a pulpotomy or pulpectomy, but timing is key. If the decay progresses too far, removing the tooth might be the best option.

Extractions can also help make room for braces if your child’s teeth are overcrowded. By taking out a tooth, our team can ensure there’s enough space for their teeth to move into place.

In cases of dental trauma, such as large cracks or chips from an injury, an extraction might be needed if the tooth is too damaged or loose. This helps prevent infection and keeps your child's smile healthy!

The Extraction Process

We will start by applying "numbing jelly" to the area before giving local anesthesia. This way, your child won’t feel anything when the anesthesia is applied. Afterward, the area will be fully numbed to ensure a comfortable experience. If your child is feeling anxious, we also offer different types of sedation, like nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, or general anesthesia. The type of sedation will depend on your child’s needs, and our team will discuss all options with you ahead of time to make sure both you and your child feel relaxed and prepared.

Loosening The Tooth

Dr. Anya Preece and our team use the gentlest and safest instruments to ensure your child feels comfortable throughout the process. An elevator will be used to gently wiggle and loosen the tooth, making the extraction as smooth as possible!

Extract The Tooth

Once the tooth is gently loosened, our team will use forceps to carefully remove it. Your child won’t feel any discomfort during this step since the area has already been numbed and prepared!

Aftercare

After the extraction, the area will be gently cleaned, and gauze will be placed over the site to help control any bleeding and promote the formation of a blood clot. We will discuss aftercare instructions with you in detail, covering what your child can eat and how to manage any discomfort or bleeding.

Dental Trauma

If a tooth has been significantly damaged due to an injury, extraction may be necessary. Kids are often prone to slips and falls, and while we always aim to help your child keep their baby teeth until they naturally fall out, there are times when intervention is needed.

Orthodontic Extractions

Sometimes, extracting a baby or adult tooth may be necessary to create space for braces or other orthodontic treatments, especially in cases of overcrowded teeth.

Decayed Or Infected Teeth

Severe decay or a tooth infection can pose serious health risks and cause significant pain for your child. Extraction can prevent the decay and infection from spreading to nearby teeth.
